Most cyberattacks start with phishing, European Commission data shows
Phishing is the starting point for 60% of cyberattacks, according to data presented today by the European Commission to mark the start of Cybersecurity Month, an initiative aimed at raising awareness and offering guidance to citizens on how to stay safe online.
The Commission notes that phishing is the most common way used by hackers to overcome the protections of electronic devices and try to gain information or access to electronic systems. Phishing comes in various forms, from emails that trick users into providing sensitive data to fake websites designed to collect data.
Cybersecurity Month is organised by the European Commission and the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA), with the support of various organisations. One of the aims is to attract new cybersecurity professionals, the Commission said in a statement. The Commission added that cyber security breaches can have devastating consequences, including for critical infrastructure and businesses.
