Record number of cyberattacks recorded in the UK

Britain reports a 50% increase in "significant cyberattacks" between August 2024 and August 2025. This was reported by Agence France-Presse, quoted by BTA, referring to a published report by a government agency.

The document also highlights the "significant threat" posed by countries such as China and Russia to the UK.

Significant cyberattacks, which are national in scope, "have a serious impact on the British government, essential services and the economy," the report by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) said.

Half of the cases detected during the period were national in scope, and 4% of them were categorized as “very serious.” This is an increase of 50% of these cases. The report also notes that the number of cyberattacks has increased for the third consecutive year.

The NCCS recalls the major cyberattacks against the British retail chain Marks & Spencer, against the car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover and the Co-op group.

"The countries involved continue to pose a significant threat to the UK," the agency said, listing China, Russia, Iran and North Korea without linking them to specific attacks.

"China is an extremely sophisticated player, operating in a wide range of sectors and institutions around the world, including in the United Kingdom," the NCCS points out, recalling in particular the revelations in September of an international cyberattack carried out by a Chinese company that infected 260,000 computers around the world.

The report's publication comes at a delicate moment for Prime Minister Keir Starmer's government, which has been accused of condescending to China after dropping legal proceedings against two men suspected of spying for Beijing.

"The latest cyberattacks should be a wake-up call. From the local coffee shop to the nation's infrastructure, all companies need to understand that they are at risk," NCCS head Richard Home noted in the report.
